GILBERTSON - Myrtle Alice Campbell Gilbertson passed away on Friday February 23, 2001 in the Coronation Health Care Complex at the age of 77 years.

Alice was born on October 15, 1923 at the family farm near Kessler, Alberta.  She was the only daughter of Hubert Lee and Mattie Viola (Cline) Campbell.

She was raised with six brothers Adin, Bud, Curley, Glen, Robert and Gene.  Alice was her Dad’s pride and joy and a “pain in the neck” to her brothers who fondly referred to her as Sis.

Alice went to school at Lakesend and completed her high school in Hughenden.  She then moved to Edmonton and attended Normal School where she received her teachers certificate.

Her teacher training was completed at Pansy School north of Czar.

A number of years were spent teaching in one room school houses at Horsehaven, Silver Heights, Landscape and Czar.  While at Silver Heights and Landscape she enlisted the support of her brother Gene who kept her company during the evening and hauled the wood and coal to keep the fires burning.

Although Gene was the teacher’s kid brother she never played favorites and disciplined him for stunts that were pulled in the classroom. According to Gene the list was long and varied.

Between training and the beginning of her teaching career she took a trip to Oklahoma and California to visit family and see the sights.

She often spoke of this time and it was a source of many happy memories.

During her time at Silver Heights she met Pete, they dated for a few years before their elopement in March of 1953 to Great Falls, Montana accompanied by friends Ken and Myrtle Leadly.

When they returned to Alberta, they lived on the farm with Grandpa and Grandma Gilbertson where they started their own family.

After purchasing Lloyd Golby’s homestead in 1956 Pete and Alice farmed and raised their family until June of 1961 when Alice took ill.

Alice spent the remainder of her life living one day at a time but lived with grace and optimism.  Her happiest times were spent visiting with family and friends.

Her children and grandchildren were her pride and joy.

Her greatest gifts were her positive attitude, her joy of life and her willingness to give, she we as inspiration to everyone who knew her.
