Local libraries discuss lack of funding with MLA
by Margo McPhail

The library will be opening on Saturdays for our fall hours starting on October 4 from 1 - 3 p.m. so come visit us during the week or on the weekend now.
Don't forget to mark your calender for "Travels With". We will be starting on October 8 with a combo package of Las Vegas and Cuba and also some tips on how to travel more cheaply.
Our library board and the Brownfield Library board met with Doug Griffiths on Tuesday for a lunch at Heart Tea Lunch and were able to discuss issues concerning libraries and the lack of funding support from the provincial government.
He gave us some good ideas as far as approaching certain County councils to give us the money we should expect.
Our chairperson will also be meeting with Minister Danyluk in regards to future funding for libraries on September 30.
I am sure that most people in our community do not know just how much the TD bank helps libraries.
They not only sponsor our Summer Reading Program but they also sponsor the TD Canadian Children's Book Week on November 15-22.
During this week we have access to bringing in storytellers and they also give free books to every Grade one child in every school.
So next time you are in our local TD bank make sure to say thank you for supporting  your local library.
I know this isn't really an issue but our board has voted that our library will be dog free so if your dog really wants that "Walter the farting dog" book, you will have to come in and get it for them.
Here are some stats about libraries in our province I found interesting
- In a year there are 17 million visits to Alberta public libraries; over one million Albertans take part in one of the 50,000 public library programs across the province; Albertans borrow over 3.3 million items from public libraries alone; and there are 1.2 million public library cardholders in Alberta, about 40 per cent of the population.
And Albertans ask nearly 4.5 million reference questions at public libraries.
So you can see just how important libraries are to the community.
I have just received quite a few new Frommers travel books in the library so if you are planning your winter vacation please come in and take a look at these books:
- 500 places to take your kids before they grow up; Ireland 2008; Walt Disney World 2008; England 2008; Scotland 2008; and Where to Buy the Best of Everything.
