Park enhances downtown core
by Lois Perepelitz

The Royal Crown Hotel had been such a huge part in the life of the town. Everyone knew that nothing could replace it but seeing that empty space every day was depressing.
I think Darcy Neufeld came up with the perfect answer.

April 24, 1990
“Town Council
“Darcy Neufeld approached council with the concept of converting the old Royal Crown Hotel lot into a small park area. After a discussion concerning its merits and budget implications, council agreed to sodding the lot and building a gazebo.
“Benches will be installed, but it was thought that these could be sponsored, the same as the benches at the golf course.
A possible overall cost of approximately $1500 should look after the project.”

It seems the original plan was to have the whole lot turned into a small park, but apparently plans can be changed.

July 31, 1990
“Proposed parking lot still angers merchant committee
“The merchants also expressed displeasure with the towns decision to lease the Royal Crown lot to McKenzie Motors for a car lot, rather than complete the original plans to convert the lot into a park to enhance the downtown core.”

I am very glad that everyone was able to reach a compromise. That is such a pretty little park and I believe that it does enhance the downtown core.
Thank you, Darcy Neufeld.
