Space rocket for Coronation
by Lois Perepelitz

Well friends, I promised you that I would let you know when I found the next chapter in the saga of the water tower.
Publisher Joyce was right, I don’t believe what they did to it in 1984.
They started off asking for suggestions from the town, and this might have been a good idea if the people would have responded.

May 2, 1984
“Only five suggested water tower color
“Five people had given suggestions regarding the color of paint desired on the water tower by last Friday.
“Two suggested the original idea of painting it orange while two liked blue and one didn’t care as long as it was painted.
“Councillor Lorne Zimmer, Water and Sewer Chairman said that because of the lack of response he will carry on with his original idea of orange paint.”

Okay it was decided, the water tower would be orange. Then Lorne had a chat with good old Marshall Stang.

May 23, 1984
“Rocket Ship design for water tower
“Councillor Lorne Zimmer presented a rocket ship concept for painting the water tower at the Town Council meeting on May 16.
“The idea was Marshall Stang’s and although it didn’t seem to sit well with all Councillors (neither did orange) it wasn’t turned down. It will be Mr. Zimmer’s intention to go with the unique painting.
“There’s apparently very few water towers left in the province with the special shape necessary to carry out the rocket ship idea.”

Aren’t we the lucky ones?
The bottom cone of the tower was painted bright red to represent the flames of a rocket taking off. The bowl was painted white with three black squares for the windows and I believe the top point was painted silver.
I don’t believe it stayed that design for all that long as people who have been here since the 90’s don’t remember it. Of course I will let you know when it was changed when I find it in the pages of future Reviews.
I hope everyone learned their lesson and responded next time they asked for suggestions.

I am now in 1985 with the collecting of the stories for the Review History book with only 23 years to go. Then some research has to be done at the Provincial Archives in Edmonton for the issues that we were missing.
Thanks to Lorna Elliott who had saved all Coronation Review issues for many many years, we were able to find one that we were missing in our files in 1985. However, there is one other one that is missing and hopefully that issue will be found in the Provincial Archives.
Once this task is completed, then comes the enormous task of editing, layout, and photos.
It almost seems too enormous a task for a few to achieve but then again, reading through all the papers seemed an enormous task a year and a half ago and now I can almost see the end!
Wow, but do I feel like I’ve lived in Coronation all of 85 years after reading through all those papers. And I’m not even that OLD!
Once the book is published it will provide hours of great reading, then everyone will feel like they belong, as I do. And I’ve only been here three years!
