International Orange, new colour for water tower
by Lois Perepelitz

It is 1970, the time of big fashion. The platform shoes, bell bottom pants, big puffy hair and all those colours. Browns, greens, yellows and don’t forget orange.
The people of the Coronation district were always up to date on modern trends. In 1970 the Town Council wanted to show that they also were into the modern styles.

“Town Council Meets
“The water tower is to be painted a new color - International Orange.
Cost of this renovation will be in the neighbourhood of $4100.
From information at hand it would appear that not too many are interested in this type of work.”

“One of the old early landmarks of the Coronation area got a face-lift over the weekend as a paint crew took on the task of painting the water tower. Now the old tower stands dressed in a coat of shimmering silver against the cloudless blue sky.”
Shimmering silver?

“Town Council Meet
“The new coat of paint on the water tower was discussed and some dissatisfaction is expected over the colour being silver and not orange as specified. This was strictly a contractors error.”
I wonder, was it really an error?
I think it was only fitting to have such an important and grand old landmark painted silver, or even gold, much more dignified than orange. I like the blue that it is painted now, a very sophisticated colour.
My publisher tells me that something even more interesting was done to the old tower sometime in the eighties, but she won’t tell me what it is. She wants to wait until I get to it before she will tell me about it.
When I do, you can be sure that I will tell everyone all about it.
