Ambling to the pond
by Lois Perepelitz

There are not very many towns on the Canadian Prairies where a fella can amble on down to the fishing pond and catch his supper.
If you live in Coronation you can, and I know a few personally who do that nearly every day throughout the summer. A lot of visitors take advantage of the fish pond too. It is just a nice relaxing way to spend a few hours.
It was first built in 1941, to be used as a swimming hole. After a few years they decided it was more trouble than it was worth and quit using it.
It was cleaned up and deepened in the late fifties, and then in 1960 they had a really great idea.

“16,500 Rainbow Fry Planted Wednesday In Fish Pond at Sports Grounds
“Wednesday brought fulfillment of local fishermen’s dream - 16,500 young Rainbow trout fry planted in the Pond at the Sports Grounds.
“The fry, a small fish, said to be about two and a half inches long, were brought in by tank truck and released under the supervision of Game Warden Johnson.
“The Review understands that the fish will not be ready for angling until August when it is expected they will have increased in size.
“Little did the Town Fathers (councillors) in 1941 realize that the swimming hole they created by putting in that ‘expensive’ dam would some day provide trout fishing for the community.”

I wonder if the ‘Town Fathers’ of 1960 ever thought that 47 years later, you would still be able to amble on down to the pond, where fathers are teaching youngsters how to fish, and men and women of all ages go just to have a relaxing day?
