Cost of farming, census numbers
by Lois Perepelitz

Gary Whalen brought us a 1953 Free Press Weekly he found in his attic. The subscription label has the name Pete Stucka on it, a name many will remember.
Gary thought an ad for a sprayer was just fantastic. This sprayer sprayed 33 feet (or 45 with extensions) had a 50 gallon tank and sold for the price of $324.
Not being a farmer I couldn’t see what was so special. I know prices are very different now, but that goes for everything.
Just for the heck of it I phoned Homestead Equipment. A very nice gentleman informed me that sprayers are now as big as 134 feet with 1600 litre tanks and sell for $60,000.
Oh, for the good old days.
I have been very curious about the population of Coronation in the 30s and 40s. They very often called it a city, and there certainly seemed to be plenty of stores and businesses.
I get the impression of a bustling, busy new city when I am reading the old papers.
It wasn’t until I got to 1941 and found this article that I finally got a definite number.
July 17, 1941
Census Shows Coronation Has 583 Persons
Census is now completed for the town of Coronation and reveals that the population is 583. This is made up of 170 men, 128 women and 285 children (1 to 20 ) living in 153 houses.
Those 583 people sure got a lot of things done.
